Background

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder in females. It may be caused, in part, by a dysfunction in insulin signaling. Select supplements that improve insulin sensitivity may also improve PCOS.

The study

In this 12-week trial, 54 females with PCOS (aged 16–40) took a tablet made of insulin-sensitizing ingredients: 600 mg of inositol, 300 mg of N-acetylcysteine, 5 mg of biotin, 5 mg of lycopene, 200 μg of chromium, 120 μg of folic acid, and 400 IU of vitamin D. The participants were tested only twice — at the start and end of the study.

The results

The menstrual cycle became more regular in nearly 66% of the participants. Excessive hair growth (hirsutism) decreased slightly and acne dramatically — both decreased more in subjects with a BMI above 23. No adverse events were recorded during or after the intervention.

Note

The study was funded by Corona Remedies, the maker of the supplement (Trazer F Forte™). There was no control group, so we cannot rule out that the benefits seen in the trial had another cause than the supplement itself.
