Quick Summary

In this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

What was studied?

The effect of supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) on systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Who was studied?

A total of 674 men and women (average ages of 35–64), including adults with overweight/obesity, diabetes/prediabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiomyopathy.

How was it studied?

A meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials was performed. Four trials were conducted in Iran, 3 were conducted in the United States, and 1 trial each was conducted in Mexico, Italy, Korea, and Germany. The daily dose of ALA ranged from 600 mg to 1,800 mg. Ten trials compared ALA to a placebo, and 1 trial compared ALA + probiotics to probiotics alone. The intervention duration ranged from 8 to 48 weeks.

What were the results?

Supplementation with ALA reduced systolic blood pressure by 5.5 mmHg (moderate certainty of evidence) and diastolic blood pressure by 3.4 mmHg (high certainty of evidence).
