Vitamin D status and sleep quality among people with restless leg syndrome Original paper
In this cross-sectional study in participants with restless leg syndrome, lower serum vitamin D levels were correlated with poorer sleep and more disease activity.

Background
Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is associated with poor sleep quality. Because vitamin D deficiency is also associated with reduced sleep quality, this study investigated the association between serum vitamin D levels and sleep quality and symptom severity among participants with RLS.
The study
This cross-sectional study included 95 participants with RLS. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to measure the participants' sleep quality and to categorize them into normal and poor sleep groups. Validated questionnaires were used to assess RLS symptom severity, depression, and anxiety, and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D was used to determine vitamin D status.
The results
Serum vitamin D levels were lower among the poor sleep group than the normal sleep group. After adjusting for several potential confounding factors, serum vitamin D remained an independent risk predictor for worse sleep among people with RLS. A negative correlation was also found between vitamin D level and disease severity, with lower vitamin D associated with worse RLS symptoms.
The authors of this study suggested that trials are needed to examine the therapeutic effects of vitamin D supplementation among people with RLS.
