Quick Summary

In this randomized controlled trial, the participants with more depressive symptoms were less likely to achieve remission from insomnia following a cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) intervention.

What was studied?

The characteristics of subjective responders and nonresponders to cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) among adults with insomnia.

This secondary analysis examined data from a randomized trial in which a CBT-I intervention reduced insomnia severity on the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) in comparison to usual care.[1] After the intervention, 56.9% of the participants who received CBT-I continued to report sleep problems.

This analysis compared the responders and nonresponders (based on self-reported insomnia remission status) to identify differences in outcomes (insomnia severity on the ISI, sleep variables, hypnotic medication use, fatigue, depressive symptoms, and dysfunctional beliefs/attitudes) as well as sociodemographics.

Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating (MADR) scale, and beliefs/attitudes regarding sleep were assessed using the Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep (DBAS) scale.
