Quick Summary

In this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, intravenous iron was more effective than oral iron for increasing hemoglobin and for reducing the odds of adverse maternal health outcomes in pregnant women.

What was studied?

The effect of intravenous (IV) versus oral iron supplementation on anemia-related outcomes in the context of pregnancy.

The primary outcomes examined were adverse outcomes in the mother (rates of blood transfusion, postpartum hemorrhage, cesarean delivery, high blood pressure disorders, and adverse outcomes overall) and infant (low birth weight, low umbilical cord hemoglobin levels, low infant length, neonatal death, preterm birth, and adverse outcomes overall), and increases (improvements) in hemoglobin (a major marker of iron status) from baseline to various points in time.

The secondary outcome was the presence of iron side effects in the mother (e.g., nausea, vomiting, metallic taste, rashes, gastrointestinal complaints such as constipation).
