When you sleep, your brain cycles repeatedly through five different stages, one of which is REM sleep. During REM sleep, your eyes dart around, without sending visual information to your brain. Your brain activity increases and your breathing and pulse speed up, while your muscles relax. REM sleep is when you dream the most; it plays an important role in learning and memory.
