This systematic review and meta-analysis involved 19 randomized controlled trials (from 14 publications) that evaluated the influence of various coffee products on measures of metabolic syndrome.

The study participants were mostly adults with overweight/obesity, dyslipidemia (abnormal levels of blood lipids), hypertension (high blood pressure), or insulin resistance (5 studies included apparently healthy and/or overweight participants). The sample sizes ranged from 10 to 142 participants, and the intervention durations ranged from 60 minutes to 24 weeks.

Three coffee products were used in the included trials: caffeinated coffee (6 trials), decaffeinated coffee (11 trials), and green coffee extract (GCE, considered as a type of decaffeinated coffee; 9 trials).

The outcomes evaluated in the meta-analysis were waist circumference (7 trials), systolic (12 trials) and diastolic (9 trials) blood pressure, and levels of fasting blood glucose (12 trials), triglycerides (13 trials), and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C; 12 trials).
