Respected By Industry Experts

Eric Cressey loves our unbiased perspective

MA in Kinesiology, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist

Bio: Eric is the president and co-founder of Cressey Sports Performance. Eric is perhaps best known for his extensive work with baseball players, with more than 100 professional players traveling to train with him each off-season. As a competitive powerlifter, Eric holds several state, national, and world records. He is the author of many books.

The supplement industry can be tremendously confusing for a number of reasons. First, the margins are incredibly high - so there are a lot of unethical weasels with no scientific background making bold and unsubstantiated claims to separate you from your money. Second, it's a dynamic industry, as new products, brands, and research emerge every single day. Fortunately, the guys at Examine.com have streamlined the process of educating us all by providing an incredibly up-to-date resource on the supplements we encounter on a daily basis, as well as some of the more obscure ones that are out there that might 'stump' us. This is an excellent product not only because it's a completely research-backed, unbiased perspective without any financial conflicts of interest, but also because it's exhaustively thorough and well written. I highly recommend it.

Dr Joanna McMillan prefers seeing the evidence

PhD

BIO: Joanna is the founder of Get Lean and a regular on Australian television and radio. She is a trained fitness instructor. She has authored 6 books and has a weekly column on fitness and nutrition.

As a science-trained nutritionist, my entire work must be evidence-based if we are not to be constantly swayed by hyped up marketing claims or people's theories. But keeping abreast of research in every area of nutrition is impossible. When this guide landed in my inbox I was stoked. It is now an invaluable resource for my work. I have at my fingertips the studies to date on a particular supplement, I can click through to read them and I can see in one glance the conclusions that can be drawn. For anyone using or advising on supplement use, I cannot recommend this guide highly enough.

Alan Aragon's clients rely on our comprehensive guides

BSc, MSc Nutrition

BIO: Alan is a nutrition researcher and educator with over 20 years of success in the field. Alan’s work has been published in popular magazines and peer-reviewed scientific journals. Alan maintains a private practice designing programs for recreational, Olympic, and professional athletes. His notable clients include Stone Cold Steve Austin, Derek Fisher, and Pete Sampras.

Examine.com is the most diligent and comprehensive resource for science-based supplement information, bar none. I refer students and colleagues to the site regularly, and I use it myself.

Dr Bryan Chung found something not found in any other resource

MSc in Rehabilitation Science, MD, PhD

BIO: Dr. Chung is a practicing plastic surgeon and a clinical researcher. His interests include clinical trials design, the development of outcome tools in clinical research, and systematic reviews of existing evidence in medicine, with a particular interest in surgical research as well as fitness/nutrition topics. He sits on the editorial board of the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine.

Examine.com has become THE repository resource for nutritional supplement information. Most other similar databases fail at what they're good at, which is being accessible and being comprehensive. Their frequent updates stay on top of the literature as it evolves. Examine.com gives me an excellent overview of the body of work, which helps me filter and refine my search strategy when I'm looking up supplements that I get asked about that I've never heard of. The Human Effect Matrix provides interpretation that is lacking in every other supplement database in the world. Most people don't have the time or interest to develop high-level expertise, but need somewhere to turn to to make informed decisions about their supplements. That information is at Examine.com.

Dr. Jose Antonio knows it's the real deal

PhD. Co-founder, International Society Of Sports Nutrition (ISSN)

BIO: Dr. Antonio is an Assistant Professor of Exercise and Sports Science at Nova Southeastern University. He's written over a dozen book and is a regular lecturer all over the country.

Examine.com rocks! It's a great source of information on the science of dietary supplements. Plenty of real science, no bro-science. It's the real deal. Kudos to Sol Orwell and Kurtis Frank for showing the rest of the nutrition world that indeed, there's plenty of science in the field of dietary supplements. Pass me the creatine please! :-)

Dr. Yoni Freedhoff says rely on research over opinion

MD CCFP Dip ABBM

BIO: Dr. Freedhoff is Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Canadian Medical Association Journal once dubbed him a Canadian "nutritional watchdog". His advocacy efforts in both obesity and nutrition policy have landed him speaking at both the Canadian House of Commons and Canada's Senate regarding his concerns surrounding Canada's Food Guide and as a member of multiple stakeholder groups run by the Public Health Agency of Canada and Health Canada. Dr. Freedhoff is quoted regularly in the national and international press, appears frequently on television.

It's insufficient to simply rely on belief, conjecture or internet advice to determine if supplements are right for you. Instead you need to rely on research. With Examine.com's reference guide not only will you find their summary of the research, but also links to the original papers should you want to do your own due diligence. Truly a massive and helpful undertaking.

Emma-Leigh Synnott knows where to find answers

MBBS, BVsc

BIO: Emma graduated in medicine from Sydney University, and is currently undertaking specialist physician training in Rehabilitation Medicine. She is a certified Sports Nutrition Specialist with the International Society of Sports Nutrition, and is an accredited Australian Strength and Conditioning Association Level 1 Strength and Conditioning Coach.

During my years of study in science and Medicine one of the first and most powerful messages elucidated is that you will never have all the answers. So as a consequence you rapidly discover how to go about finding those answers... Years later I can honestly say that my go to evidence-based information source on supplements would have to be Examine.com. Unbiased and meticulously put together, Examine.com provides a clear and detailed resource for novices and professionals alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Are Examine.com Guides Different?

Most supplement research comes with an inherent bias. Studies are often backed by supplement companies with a vested interest to arrive at a conclusion substantiating their claims. All of this is done with one purpose in mind - to make you spend your money on pills and powders which may not work.

Other companies that don't do research themselves just cherrypick studies that make their products look good. Often time these are studies performed on rats and in Petri dishes

As Examine.com is an independent company that does not sell any supplements, we do not cherrypick. We are not trying to sell you supplements. We are 100% neutral and conduct all of our research independently, allowing us to come to our own conclusions regarding the validity of which supplements work.

Are Examine.com Guides useful to regular folks like me, who are not researchers or athletes?

Absolutely. The Stack Guides are actually written with our own mothers in mind. They are easy-to-read and give you simple step-by-step directions on which supplements to take (and which to not waste money on).

How are the Stack Guides different from Supplement-Goals Reference?
  • Stack Guides are easy-to-follow with step-by-step instructions. They can be easily used by your mother or father! Supplement-Goals Reference contains the raw data in over 1000 pages. Not very friendly for the layperson.

Unless you are a researcher, you should choose a Stack Guide.

All Guides Are Written By Unbiased Researchers

We look for new scientific research and summarize the findings for you in Plain English.

Kamal Patel

Director

Kamal is a nutrition researcher with an MPH and MBA from Johns Hopkins University, and is on hiatus from a PhD in nutrition in which he researched the link between diet and chronic pain. He has published peer-reviewed articles on vitamin D and calcium as well as a variety of clinical research topics. Kamal has also been involved in research on fructose and liver health, mindfulness meditation, and nutrition in low income areas.

Kurtis Frank

BA in Applied Human Nutrition (University of Guelph)

A recreational bodybuilder and powerlifter, Kurtis has a passion for dietary supplements due to a desire to harmonize the discord between the preventative and rehabilitative potential of some dietary supplements and the medical community's lack of interest in combining supplements and preventative medicine. Kurtis strives to expose the supplements rife with inefficacy and insufficient data, in order to uncover the diamonds in the rough. Kurtis' research work on Examine.com began while he was still a student. Upon graduating in the spring of 2012, gathering and analyzing research on supplementation and nutrition became his full-time job.

Gregory Lopez

MA in Molecular Biophysics, PharmD

Gregory enjoys bringing his quantitative and analytical skills to bear on issues relevant to people's health and well-being.

Bill Willis

PhD in Biomedical Science

An avid member of the fitness industry for the past 15 years, Bill is currently a postdoctoral fellow, where he is examining the role of metabolic stress in the control of protein synthesis and inflammation in health and disease.
