Ocular (Eye) Health Overview:

Supplements that have interactions with eye health; these are usually related to reducing Intraocular pressure or reducing disease pathology of glaucoma

Dosage: 500mcg

500mcg of Melatonin has been shown to reduce intraocular blood pressure in otherwise healthy people 2-3 hours after ingestion, which is due to activation of melatonin receptors on the eye and related organs.

Melatonin may also confer protective effects for eye health via its anti-oxidative effects, but these may not be unique to melatonin and may merely be suppression of further disease pathology rather than reversing pathology. Higher doses may be used for this protective effect though, 3mg nightly.


Dosage: 300

A moderate dose used for preventative medicine (of which the benefits to eye health with Benfotiamine seem to be, rather than rehabilitative). No inherent benefit to eye health, but has mechanism to greatly reduce the adverse effects of high blood glucose on the retina.

If anything, Benfotiamine may not inherently be an 'eye health' supplement but can be seen as preventative of diabetic retinopathy (a decline in eye health associated with diabetes, due to high blood glucose)

Eclipta Alba

Dosage: 3g

Very poor evidence to be honest, and this is likely to be removed from the list in the near future when better compounds get added and displace it.

Eclipta Alba has traditionally been used in Ayurveda for eye, hair, and liver health; it actually has evidence for hair and liver health too with fairly good potency in animals.

The one human study (single blind) using 3g of the basic leaves (no extraction) daily reported that 4/30 of the group reported 'improved vision' as a side-effect without being informed of the test herb; subjects were merely prehypertensive, and there was no information as to whether this was seemingly random or affected people with poor vision.

A possible supplement requiring more evidence.
