In a three year extension of the HOPE trial which gave persons over the age of 55 (preexisting diabetes or cardiovascular ailments) supplementation of 400 IU vitamin E, there appeared to be an increase in heart failure rates relative to placebo associated with a greater rate of decline in LVEF. Despite the increase in heart failure, overall cardiovascular mortality was not changed.
