In highly trained athletes given vitamin E supplementation (800 IU alpha-tocopherol daily for two months preceding a race) did not influence performance during the race (Ironman) and it also failed to influence a variety of biomarkers in the blood such as homocysteine.

General oxidation (FRAP potential of the blood) was reduced in the vitamin E condition when tested 90 minutes after the race, but not immediately after, and cortisol appeared to be reduced relative to placebo immediately after but due to large variability this was not statistically significant.

Lipid peroxides measured in the blood 90 minutes after the race were significantly higher with vitamin E relative to placebo, which was not seen before the race nor immediately after.
