In a sample of professional football (American) players, 100mg/kg bodyweight glutamine supplementation was able to reduce serum increases in ammonia in response to exercise when taken chronically (5 days); it appeared to raise it acutely (single dose). Supplemental Alanine did similar effects as glutamine.
Urate was increased 10-20% acutely, with no influence over 5 days; Urea was increased 10-20% acutely and remained 10% elevated after 5 days. Creatinine release during exercise (biomarker of muscle damage) was unaffected by supplementation.
