Supplementation of 4g fish oil (95% EPA ethyl esters) for 3 months was able to raise skin levels of EPA 8-fold and conferred a reduced risk for sunburns, an increase threshold for sunlight induced erythema (36%) and reduced DNA damage induced by sunlight (although DNA damage per se was unaffected). The authors hypothesized that these mechanisms may underlie the reduced risk of skin cancer associated with fish consumption.
