This single-blind randomized controlled trial explored the impact of 320 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA daily for six months on several metabolic blood markers and anthropometrics in adults with type 2 diabetes and without obesity. Supplementation had beneficial effects on waist circumference, blood glucose and HbA1c, blood lipids, and leptin, but no clear effect on resistin, insulin, adiponectin, and HOMA-IR was found.

However, it should be noted that the authors analyzed before-after effects in the fish oil and placebo groups, rather than comparing changes in the two groups directly. This way of analyzing the data throws out a lot of information and makes it more difficult to establish a causal relationship. On top of this, some irregularities in the reported data were noticed (e.g. a large difference in mean and standard deviation of the reported triglyceride levels in the placebo group), raising the possibility that there were errors in reporting the data. Because of this, the results of this study should be taken lightly.
