In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 52 obese and overweight participants took 2 g of spirulina platensis tablets or placebo for 12 weeks in conjunction with a calorie-restricted diet.
38 participants completed the intervention. The primary outcomes were said to be those related to body composition, though the trial wasn't powered for any in particular. There was a greater reduction in body weight, lean body mass, triglycerides, and c-reactive protein in the spirulina group. There were non-significant greater improvements in lipids and other measures of body composition in general.
The trial was preregistered: NCT02993627
