Spirulina Maxima Improves Insulin Sensitivity, Lipid Profile, And Total Antioxidant Status In Obese Patients With Well-treated Hypertension: A Randomized Double-blind Placebo-controlled Study

Effect Decrease
Values INS (µIU/ml) Mean and SD. mmol/l. Control: before 31.8 ± 3.7, after 30.3 ± 7.1. Spirulina: before 32.1 ± 4.2, after 29.4 ± 3.4.
Trial Design Randomized trial
Trial Length 1-6 months
Number of Subjects 50
Sex Both Genders
Notes for this study:
In a 3-month randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 50 participants with hypertension and obesity took 2 g of spirulina or placebo.

There was a greater reduction in LDL, IL-6, greater increase in total antioxidant state, and insulin sensitivity ratio in the spirulina group. There was less of a reduction in HDL, and the difference between groups at the end was statistically significant. There was a nonsignificantly greater reduction in body mass, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose, and no apparent effect on insulin.
