In a 6-month non-randomized, open-label pilot trial, 15 participants with NAFLD took 6 g/d of spirulina.

There was a reduction in AST, ALT, and γ-GT compared with baseline, though there weren't any sonographic improvements. There was an improvement in triglycerides, HDL, LDL, total cholesterol, insulin resistance, hemoglobin, atherogenic index, and body weight.
