The Effect of Spirulina in the Treatment of Bronchial Asthma
Effect Increase
Values FEV 1 % predicted. Mean and SD. Mean and SD. FVC (% predicted). Medication Only: before 58 ± 19, after 84 ± 11. Spirulina Only: before 59 ± 15, after 82 ± 11. Combination: before 69 ± 15, after 85 ± 11
Trial Design Non-randomized controlled trial
Trial Length 1-6 months
Number of Subjects 34
Sex Both Genders
Notes for this study:
In a controlled trial, 34 participants with bronchial asthma took their regular medication, 1 g/d spirulina, or the combination for 2 months.

Pulmonary function improved the most in the combination group, with estimated forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume, and peak expiratory flow rate all seeing greater improvements.
