In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 19 participants who were professional rowers took 1500 mg of spirulina platensis extract daily for 6 weeks while undergoing a training program.
There weren't any statistically significant differences in rowing power, time trial performance, or lactic acid between groups. There was a somewhat greater increase in NK cells post-exercise in the spirulina groups and less of an increase in T regulatory cells, but the difference in cytotoxic T lymphocytes cells and T cells gamma delta weren't clear.
