Two studies were conducted with either oral ingestion of astaxanthin (3mg with meals) or topical application of astaxanthin where a cream contains 5% of an astaxanthin containing oil; due to the oil containing only 0.094% astaxanthin, the ultimate concentration was 78.9µM.
Skin elasticity in the cheek and crows feet (side of the eye) were significantly improved and age spots reduced. Although a significant reduction in TEWL was noted, there was no whole-group improvement in moisture content although a subset of persons with dry skin noted improvement and sebum oil in men showed a mild reducing effect (not statistically significant).
