In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 32 trained cyclists or triathletes were allocated to take 20 mg of astaxanthin daily or placebo for 4 weeks.
There was no statistically significant difference between groups in the change in VO2, VCO2, RER, HR, or RPE at rest or during submaximal exercise. There were also no statistically significant differences in glucose, insulin, lactate, or free fatty acids during exercise. There were no differences in endurance exercise time trial performance.
