When subjects were given the standard dose of colpermin (0.2mL peppermint oil) four hours prior to a colonoscopy, colonic tension and spasm frequency were significantly reduced (due to the relaxing properties of peppermint oil) and this led to increased tolerance by patients and an overall improved experienced during the colonoscopy by both patient and practitioner.
