In tension type headache in otherwise healthy young persons, topical application of a 10% peppermint oil in ethanol (at the onset of headache, 15 minutes later, and 30 minute later again) is able to reduce muscular tension of the temporal muscles as assessed via EMG and improve the mood state which is normally impaired by headaches.
