Mangifera Indica L. (Vimang) Protection Against Serum Oxidative Stress In Elderly Humans

Effect Increase
Trial Design Cohort
Trial Length 1-6 months
Number of Subjects 50
Sex Both Genders
Age Range 65+
Notes for this study:
Stem bark tablets (Vimang brand) at 300mg three times daily with meals over the course of 60 days in elderly subjects appeared to exert an antioxidative effect by increasing serum total antioxidant capacity (TAS) in a time dependent manner up to 55.9%. Serum lipid peroxidation (assessed by MDA) appeared to also be reduced 58.4% relative to baseline.

Glutathione (GSH) was not altered by aging nor was it altered by supplementation, although GSSG (reduced form) was reduced with supplementation indicative of an antioxidant effect. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity seemed to increase with supplementation although it was not time-dependent.

While this study had two groups, the entirety of the elderly group took supplements while the youthful control did not. No adequate placebo control was used in the elderly group.
