Application of a cream containing 0.4% retinol three times a week for 24 weeks in elderly subjects was able to increase procollagen I expression and glycosaminoglycan expression in skin, and resulted in a significantly less wrinkled appearance compared to placebo lotion.
Tactile roughness was also reduced.
Side-effects were fairly common after 24 weeks (redness, itching, dryness, burning sensations) but were mostly quite mild in severity, not commonly causing dropouts.
