In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 60 participants with age-related macular degeneration took 30 mg of saffron or placebo daily for 6 months.

40 participants completed the trial, and there weren't statistically significant differences in macular thickness after 6 months. There also weren't statistically significant differences after 3 months for ERG amplitude, though there was a greater increase in the placebo group at 3 months.
