Saffron Therapy For The Treatment Of Mild/moderate Age-related Macular Degeneration: A Randomised Clinical Trial

Effect Increase
Trial Design Randomized trial
Trial Length 1-6 months
Number of Subjects 100
Sex Both Genders
Notes for this study:
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, 100 participants with mild/moderate age-related muscular degeneration took 20 mg of saffron or placebo for 3 months before crossover.

The primary outcome was changes in best-corrected visual acuity and it improved in the saffron group relative to placebo on average, though not for those with AREDS grades 2 and 3. The increase in mfERG response density was 2.1% (p = 0.08). Microperimetry and flicker perimetry weren't different.

Adverse events weren't meaningfully different.
