Effect of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) on lipid profile, glycemic indices and antioxidant status among overweight/obese prediabetic individuals: A double-blinded, randomized controlled trial
Effect Increase
Values DPPH %. Mean and SD. Placebo: before 10.00 ± 3.32, after 9.15 ± 2.94. Saffron: before 11.06 ± 3.24, after 13.46 ± 3.33.
Trial Design Randomized trial
Trial Length 1-6 months
Number of Subjects 75
Sex Both Genders
Age Range 30-44, 45-64
Body Types Obese, Overweight
Notes for this study:
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 75 participants with prediabetes took 15 mg of saffron extract or placebo daily for 8 weeks.

There was a greater reduction in fasting glucose, HbA1c and a greater increase in antioxidant activity via DPPH. There weren't any statistically significant differences between groups for lipid profile, BUN, or creatinine.
