In this 6-week randomized, controlled trial, 20 male professional rowers took 150 mg of l-theanine or placebo daily during an intense training camp.
Power on the 2000 m rowing ergometer didn't differ between theanine and placebo, and neither did lactate or time performance. Il-10 was higher after exercise and lowerduring recovery, IL-2 was higher after exercise, and the same during recovery, IL-4, and IFN weren't different. Tregs were higher during recovery but not after exercise, NK cells weren't different, Tδγ cel cells weren't different, and cytotoxic t-cells were higher after exercise, but this wasn't statistically significant. There didn't seem to be notable differences for white blood cells, granulocytes, lymphocytes or total antioxidant capacity between groups.
