When assessed by a test involving throwing one of two partners in an alternating manner for time, sodium bicarbonate at 300mg/kg in elite judo athletes was able to increase performance on the second and third bout (but not first) and overall increased the total amount of throws and work volume by 5.1%.
In a subsequent upper body wingate test, mean and peak power was increased in the 3rd and 4th tests but no significant effect was noted on the first test.
