As assessed by ultrasound, red clover extract (40-80mg isoflavones) appears to increase arterial compliance by up to 23% in otherwise healthy postmenopausal women despite no influence on circulating lipids relative to placebo group (randomization had 5-fold more women in active treatment than placebo, and the sample size was only 17).

In postmenopausal women greater than sixty years of age, a formononetin rich isoflavone supplement from red clover (Rimostil) daily for a period of six months failed to alter attention processing (Trail making tests) and had a small improvement in the block design test (visual spatial reasoning) yet failed to influence most parameters while placebo tended to outperform on a digit span test and in a verbal memory test.

In a preliminary study where postmenopausal women with high cholesterol were given active treatment (40-80mg of red clover isoflavones) or placebo in a 6:1 ratio, supplementation over 12 weeks failed to significantly reduce circulating cholesterol or triglycerides and also failed to alter blood pressure or weight.

Oral supplementation of 50mg isoflavones (mostly formononetin) from red clover for four weeks in postmenopausal women with type II diabetics was able to improve basal blood flow as assessed by forearm resistance (L-NMMA treatment) and reduced blood pressure by 8mmHg systolic and 4.3mmHg diastolic. No statistically significant changes were noted elsewhere.
