In a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, 72 participants with NASH took 2000 mg l-carnitine with calorie restriction or placebo with calorie restriction for 12 weeks.
The carnitine group saw a greater reaction in hs-CRP, transforming growth factor beta, TNF-a, and malondialdehyde, which continued to be the case when adjusted for baseline values, age, and baseline BMI.
