In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 72 participants with osteoarthritis took 750 mg of l-carnitine tartrate or placebo for 8 weeks.

There was a statistically significant greater reduction in pain, IL-1-beta, and matrix metalloproteinase-1 but not 13 or c-reactive protein.
