In a randomized, controlled trial, 20 healthy participants and 15 patients with type 2 diabetes took 0.28 μmole/kg/minute of l-carnitine or saline during a 2-hour euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp.
The carnitine group saw greater glucose update, a higher glucose oxidation rate, and greater glucose storage, the differences being statistically significant for both healthy participants and type 2 diabetics.
