In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial 50 children with asthma and 50 healthy took 350 mg of l-carnitine 3 times daily for 6 months.
The primary outcomes were lung functions and Childhood Asthma Control Test (C-ACT) score. Lung function and C-ACT saw statistically significant improvements relative to placebo. There were fewer emergency room visits, fewer hospitalizations, and there was less oral steroid use in the carnitine groups among asthmatics. Blood eosinophils were reduced more. Serum IgE declined more but the difference wasn't statistically significant.
