In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 40 participants with traumatic brain injury took 2 g of L-carnitine per day along with normal treatment, or placebo with normal treatment for one week.
After 7 days, there wasn't a statistically significant difference for seizure, intracranial pressure, or Glasgow coma scale. Neuron-specific enolase and mortality weren't statistically significantly different. There weren't statistically significant differences for neurobehavioral and neurocognitive disorders after 3 months through the carnitine group had marginally better outcomes.
