In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 60 participants with PCOS took 250 mg of carnitine or placebo for 12 weeks.
Mental health was the primary outcome, and there was a statistically significantly greater improvement on the Beck Depression Inventory, Depression Anxiety And Stress Scale, and General Health Questionnaire. There was also a statistically significantly greater increase in total antioxidant capacity, and reduction in malondialdehyde. There was a nonsignificant but notable increase in glutathione.
