In a randomized, controlled trial, 208 participants undergoing hepatectomy without hepaticojejunostomy for primary liver neoplasms took 30 mg/kg ofl- carnitine or no carnitine for 2 weeks before liver resection.
Three days after the operation, ammonia levels were statistically significantly lower in the carnitine group, neutrophil count was lower, and prothrombin was higher. The hospital stay was shorter in the carnitine group but there wasn't a statistically significant difference for complications.
