Colorectal cancer patients undergoing six cycles of 5-FU chemotherapy were given either kefir mouthwash + drink (250 ml 2x/day), or saltwater mouthwash (control). There was no significant difference in the incidence of oral mucositis (acute inflammation of the oral mucous membranes, a common side effect of chemotherapy). The study also compared the serum proinflammatory cytokine levels (TNF-alpha, IL-1beta and IL-6) of the two groups, and found no significant difference.Funding issues for this study:
