Supplementation of 750mg valerian root daily for eight weeks in persons with diagnosed OCD was able to reduce symptoms on the Y-BOCS by up to 25% (from around 40 points at baseline to 30 points) whereas placebo was half as effective, with a statistically significant difference at week four extending to the end of the study. Treatment was well tolerated aside from somnolence, which was significantly more present as a side-effect in the valerian group.
