Supplementation of niacin in increasing doses (500mg to 2g to minimize flushing) in nonobese healthy subjects for two weeks appeared to increase HDL cholesterol without any effect on triglycerides. While not affecting basal glucose or insulin concentrations, there appeared to be a reduction in insulin sensitivity as assessed by glucose disposal rate (18%).
There appeared to be a reduction in lipid oxidation with niacin therapy, but due to an increase in carbohydrate oxidation there was no net effect on metabolic rate.
