In a retrospective chart study, it was noted that persons who had low blood carnitine values that were treated with levocarnitine (L-Carnitine) had significantly improved mood and cognition after treatment, and that 11 out of 38 cases cognitively normalized after correcting the deficiency.

In elderly subjects consuming Acetyl-L-Carnitine daily, fatigue (mental, physical, and severity of both) was significantly decreased in the ALCAR group. Cognition was also improved as assessed by MMSE.
