Withania Somnifera Improves Semen Quality By Regulating Reproductive Hormone Levels And Oxidative Stress In Seminal Plasma Of Infertile Males

Effect Increase
Trial Design Double blind
Trial Length 1-6 months
Number of Subjects 75
Gender Male
Notes for this study:
After 5 g of withania somnifera root powder daily, sperm quality increased in all three tested groups (three types of male infertility, fertile men were not tested); sperm concentration, overall volume, motility, and count all increased. All tested groups experienced an increase in anti-oxidant enzymes in the semen and a decrease in oxidative products, with the Normozoospermic group having greater levels of catalase than control.

Testosterone and Luteinizing hormone were increased (trend to normalization to control group) and follicle stimulating hormone decreased (trend to normalization with control) in tested groups; fertile men were not tested.

Efficacy Of Withania Somnifera On Seminal Plasma Metabolites Of Infertile Males: A Proton NMR Study At 800 MHz

Effect Increase
Trial Design Double blind
Trial Length 1-6 months
Number of Subjects 180
Gender Male
Age Range 18-29, 30-44
Body Types Average
Notes for this study:
5 g of ashwagandha root daily for three months in infertile men was able to improve sperm motility and quality while also normalizing the reduction seen in testosterone concentrations.

Examining The Effect Of Withania Somnifera Supplementation On Muscle Strength And Recovery: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Effect Increase
Values 96.19 vs. 18.00 ng/dL change over 8 weeks in ashwagandha vs. placebo groups respectively. Intergroup comparision was significant. Intragroup ashwagandha increase was also significant, but intragroup placebo did not significantly change from baseline.
Trial Design Randomized trial
Trial Length 1-6 months
Number of Subjects 57
Gender Male
Age Range 18-29, 30-44, 45-64
Body Types Untrained
Notes for this study:
Untrained men were put on a periodized strength training program and given either placebo or 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice daily for 8 weeks. The ashwagandha group improved their 1RM of bench press by almost 20 kg over placebo and leg extension by almost 5 kg. Muscle size, serum testosterone, and muscle recovery as measured by plasma creatine kinase was also improved versus placebo.

Withania Somnifera Improves Semen Quality In Stress-Related Male Fertility

Effect Increase
Trial Design Cohort
Trial Length 1-6 months
Number of Subjects 60
Gender Male
Age Range 18-29, 30-44
Body Types Average
Notes for this study:
Supplementation of 5 g of the root powder daily with skin milk for 3 months in infertile men with otherwise normal sperm morphology was able to increase sperm concentration and motility with more efficacy in men who were highly stressed (rather than heavy smokers or those who were neither) and was able to increase testosterone (10–22%) and reduce cortisol (11–32% AUC; 36-48% when measured at 4 p.m.) with similar favoring of stressed men.
