Overweight and hyperlipidemic patients consuming a high fat and cholesterol diet with a portion of carbohydrate substituted for 36-53g of pyruvate was able to reduce LDL and Total cholesterol relative to placebo, and reduced heart rate and blood pressure relative to placebo.

The diet used in this study was a caloric surplus, but weight changes were not reported.

28% of the subjects in placebo developed loose stools relative to 58% in the pyruvate group.
