In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, 30 participants took 70 ml of beetroot juice (400 mg of nitrate), 8 g of citrulline), or placebo in a Blackcurrant juice drink prior to leg extension exercise.
There weren't any notable differences between groups for peak torque, average torque, or total work on the leg extension tests. There also weren't differences in blood urea nitrogen or lactate. Muscle ultrasound didn't reveal notable differences in density between groups.
