Does L-citrulline Supplementation Improve Exercise Blood Flow In Older Adults?
Effect | None |
Values | Mean and SD. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (m/s). Women: Placebo: before 8.9 ± 1.5, after 9.1 ± 1.7. Citrulline: before 9.0 ± 1.5, after 9.0 ± 1.4. Men: Placebo: before 8.8 ± 1.2, after 8.8 ± 1.0. Citrulline: before 8.7 ± 1.2, after 8.8 ± 1.2. |
Trial Design | Randomized trial |
Trial Length | 1-2 Weeks |
Number of Subjects | 25 |
Sex | Both Genders |
Age Range | 45-64, 65+ |
In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, 25 healthy participants aged 61-80 took 6 g (3 g twice daily) of citrulline or placebo for 2 weeks each with a 2-week washout period in between.
Blood flow during exercise increased only for men while taking citrulline during exercise. Diastolic, but not systolic blood pressure was statistically significantly reduced for both sexes at rest, while plasma nitric oxide and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity weren't statistically significantly different.
