Quick Summary
In this randomized controlled trial, a severe energy (calorie) deficit, compared with a moderate energy deficit, resulted in greater reductions in body weight and improvements in androgen (hormone) status in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
What was studied?
The effects of a very low-calorie diet (VLCD) versus a moderate-calorie diet (MOD) in women with obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
The primary outcome was the change in free androgen index (FAI; the level of total testosterone, divided by the level of sex hormone binding globulin, or SHBG).
The secondary outcomes included the following:
- Anthropometrics/body composition: BMI, body weight, fat mass, muscle mass, waist circumference, and waist-hip ratio
- Sex hormones: androstenedione, DHEA, follicle-stimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone
- Fasting glucose
- HOMA-IR
- Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)
- Blood lipids
- High-sensitivity C-reactive protein
- Blood pressure
- Liver enzymes: aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT).
