Quick Summary
In this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials in participants with periodontitis, supplementing with omega-3 after scaling and root planing treatment was associated with greater reductions (improvements) in pocket probing depth and clinical attachment.
What was studied?
The effect of supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids on clinical outcomes after scaling and root planing (SRP) treatments among people with periodontitis.
The primary outcome was probing pocket depth (PD) reduction after SRP. Excess pocket depth can be indicative of periodontitis, and a reduction is desirable after SRP. The secondary outcome of interest was the reduction in clinical attachment loss (CAL). The CAL measurement represents the amount of tooth attachment that has been lost, and a reduction in CAL is desirable after SRP.
