Hippocrates once said that “all disease begins in the gut,” and since the discovery of our gut microbiome, research has lent some preliminary credence to this lofty claim. Our gut, specifically the large intestine, is home to over 400 species of bacteria that outnumber our bodily cells. Contrary to the negative connotations of bacteria, our bacterial friends are thought to work synergistically with our digestive system to:
synthesize nutrients and enhance mineral absorption
produce antibacterial substances against pathogenic bacteria
suppress bacterial infections and enhance immune function
… and remove carcinogens
This raises an important question: If a healthy gut microbiome can offset disease, can people supplement the beneficial bacteria directly or promote their growth through prebiotic supplementation?
