Study under review: Marine Omega-3 Supplementation and Cardiovascular Disease: An Updated Meta-Analysis of 13 Randomized Controlled Trials Involving 127 477 Participants.
Study Deep Dives #42, “A fishy relationship between omega-3 fatty acids and heart health” covered a 2018 meta-analysis that examined the possible cardiovascular benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. That meta-analysis had several strengths: it was preregistered and aimed to collect the best evidence by only looking at larger, long term studies. And, it pretty much found no effect. However, three very large, long term trials looking at omega-3s’ ability to reduce cardiovascular disease risk have been published since then. The study under review aimed to update the 2018 meta-analysis with these three studies to determine if they change anything.
